I like these ideas :D I'm thinking perhaps a sort of 1/2 combo thing?

So what if, Vyers gives Ted a couple of days to 'settle in' before starting the training-- but before they can get around to it, the event starts. Vyers tries to seal the portal and fails, getting attacked by the spirits. Ted could, in theory, run into him before or after this, so either they run into each other whilst trying to find out 'wtf just happened' and he sees Vyers attacked not long afterwards, or he finds Vyers in his damaged state afterwards as in option 3.

Vyers probably acts a bit off, but insists there's nothing wrong and that he probably just needs some rest. Cue a few days later and he suddenly shows up on the comm -demanding- Ted attend his lessons (because clearly it's Ted not being focused enough that is the cause for it not happening until now). At which point Ted gets to fight him in the arena with him showing all his brutal demon glory.

How does that sound? Also, not sure what level of brutal would be okay with you - it's really up to you how badly you want Ted to get hurt.
